El arándano chileno no llegó al consumidor como arándano: llegó dentro de una mezcla congelada de un tercero, bajo la marca propia del retailer.
On September 2, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. (San Carlos, Chile) expanded its July recall to include a lot of Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend sold at Walmart across 16 states. The Chilean blueberry did not reach the consumer as a blueberry: it arrived inside a third party’s frozen blend, under the retailer’s own label.

Ese último número es el que importa. No hubo un solo enfermo atribuido al lote de Walmart. La ampliación fue precautoria, disparada por el traceback documental: los registros mostraron dónde más había ido a parar esa materia prima. Sin esos registros, el recall no habría sido de un lote — habría sido de la categoría entera, o no habría llegado nunca a ese producto.
That last number is the one that matters. Not one illness was attributed to the Walmart lot. The expansion was precautionary, triggered by documentary traceback: the records showed where else that raw material had gone. Without those records, the recall would not have covered one lot — it would have covered the whole category, or it would never have reached that product at all.

Your product can show up on a US shelf under a brand that isn’t yours, in a format you never shipped, in states you never sold to. If you can’t reconstruct where each lot went, you don’t control the scope of your own recall — someone else defines it, and by default they define it wide.

Como contexto de temporada, la vigilancia nacional del CDC registró 18.445 casos confirmados de ciclosporiasis adquirida en EE.UU. entre el 1 de mayo y el 31 de agosto, contra 1.180 en la misma ventana de 2025. Es 15,6 veces la temporada anterior. Y es un piso, no un techo: el CDC advierte que quedan miles de casos pendientes de clasificar.
For seasonal context, CDC national surveillance logged 18,445 confirmed domestically acquired cyclosporiasis cases between May 1 and August 31, against 1,180 in the same 2025 window. That is 15.6 times the prior season. And it’s a floor, not a ceiling: CDC notes thousands of cases still pending classification.

Un brote de esta magnitud fija el precedente de cuánto escrutinio recibe la categoría — y la FDA sigue inspeccionando y muestreando en terreno en México. Si exportás hojas verdes, tomate, pimiento o pepino, este es el nivel de exigencia documental que se normaliza.
Lettuce and leafy greens are on the Food Traceability List, carrying the highest risk score on it. An outbreak of this size sets the precedent for how much scrutiny the category draws — and FDA inspection and sampling in Mexico is ongoing. If you export leafy greens, tomatoes, peppers or cucumbers, this is the documentary standard that becomes normal.

As of September 7, FDA’s CORE table lists 16 active investigations. In 9 of them the causal food is listed as “not yet identified” — including four Cyclospora clusters and two Salmonella outbreaks each already above 90 cases.

Más de la mitad de las investigaciones abiertas están estancadas por falta de trazabilidad. Eso corta para los dos lados: mientras el origen no aparece, la sospecha se reparte entre toda la categoría y todos los proveedores de esa categoría. Poder demostrar rápido que tu lote no es el lote es tan valioso como poder demostrar que sí lo es.
More than half of the open investigations are stalled for lack of traceability. That cuts both ways: while the source stays unknown, suspicion spreads across the entire category and every supplier in it. Being able to show quickly that your lot isn’t the lot is worth as much as being able to show that it is.
